Another Day, Another Unarmed Black Man Dead: David McAtee, Owner of Popular BBQ Spot & Community Leader, Killed By Louisville Police

This is why we are fed up.

Louisville Police shot and killed David McAtee just after midnight Sunday evening. Yes, this is the same city and state where officers stormed in and killed Breonna Taylor in the comfort of her own home.

McAtee owner of the popular eatery, YaYa’s BBQ, was fatally shot Monday morning. He was revered in the community and known to let the police eat free in his restaurant.

Both Lousiville Metro Police Department officers and National Guard soldiers fired their weapons after officials said someone shot at the officers from a parking lot nearby.

Monday afternoon, Mayor Greg Fischer fired police chief Steve Conrad after learning none of the officers at the fatal shooting had their body cameras turned on. Additionally, law enforcement let David McAtee’s body lay in the street for more than 12 hours, inciting additional protests.

In an announcement, Fischer said, “this type of institutional failure will not be tolerated,” he also added that, “an immediate change in leadership is required.”

The incident is currently under state, federal, and local police investigation.

Just last month the same police chief, Conrad, announced that he would retire at the end of this month after pressure came down from the fatal police shooting of Breonna Taylor, the 26-year old ER technician who was gunned down in her apartment. Neither incident had body camera footage.

Governor Andy Beshear also chimed in on Monday and said that Conrad’s firing “had to happen.”

McAtee’s mother, Odessa Riley, says, “it’s alright to lose a mother or father. You get hurt by that, too. But when a mother loses her child, a piece of you goes along with that child.”

“My son was a good son. All he did on that barbecue corner is try to make a dollar for himself and his family,” she added. “And they come along and they killed my son.”

“He fed them free,” says Riley, “he fed the police and didn’t charge them nothing.

Others also spoke up about their relationship with McAtee. Metro Council President David James says, “he’s just a good, decent person” he adds that McAtee “believes in this neighborhood. He loves his city, loves his neighborhood, loves to cook food, loves to keep people happy with his sense of humor. He’s just a great guy.”

If you don’t understand why Black people are tired and exhausted, this is just further proof. We are dying for merely existing and a change has to come.

  5. I am saddened and so so sorry that this is happening. The creator is giving us a chance to love and we just can not seem to get it right. All those cops who did not have their cameras on know that they did wrong and should be fired for being so irresponsible. I am tired of paying taxes for this kind of svc.
This further shows that the police have an agenda if they did not they would stand with the peaceful protesters and fight for justice to be served for the senseless murders of these human beings

  6. There are no words to describe how I feel. I offer my sincerest condolences and prayers for this Mother and her family. This is truly an out rage that a Mother has to bury her child due to Police brutality in the twentieth century

  9. These headlines saddened my heart , everytime I hear of a African-American male killed at the hands of a police officer makes me want ta broke down a cry. Or any African-American that’s sencelessly killed by law enforcement , just because they have guns that they can freely use. You don’t give life so how do they feel they can take life. SAD and unfair. But you also reap what you sow and that’s a promise.

  10. why is all of this happening? what did people do to deserve this?

  11. It’s time to be recognized as human beans and not animals to be hunted and killed in the streets. The KKK aren’t wearing sheets any more. They are wearing guns and robes and uniforms. Black people beware of your enemies from now on. Look over your shoulders, walk litely and beware of your surroundings! Your enemies are watching you from police cars.

  12. I want to help make a change come now.

  13. God bless the McAtee family. God help us all. We have a right to be here and say his name, DAVID MCATEE.

  14. My heart cries out for his family! Fire the chief. Charge the officers with murder. This shot has got to change!

  15. Laws must change. Starting wirh big business that funds these politicians. We must compile a list of big funders and hold them accountable by not spending a dime with them. This militia activity by cops will not be tolerated.

  16. Every Officer that did not have their body camera on should be fired with the Chief.

  17. We want
    To do
    And be

  18. Black LIVES Matters❣
My condolences, prayers and heart is with his Mom and family.

  19. OH YES RIGHTTTTTTTT NOW

  20. The accountability of every Police Officers and National Guards who had their cameras off should ALL be FIRED. The fact that they had them off shows they didn’t give a dam about the outcome of killing David McAtee, and others that could have been killed by them which could have been easy for them to justified. They compromised their position in the wake of George Floyd’s death that resulted in the murdered by four (4) police officers that will viral. The family of David McAtee, and friends, and the Community should peacefully protest and demand accountability of those officers and guards. They intentionally had their cameras off so no one could see what actually transpired so they can get away with the murder. These are NOT honorable men, they are a menace to Law Enforcement in our society. Therefore, they should be terminated effective immediately.

  21. Those policemen should be put in front of a firing squad….no good bastards, I’m tired of them killing our sweet. Good, innocent people’s without even trying to see if it’s the right person,,just because we’re black then ure already Doomed,,,”POWER TO OUR PEOPLES 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

  22. To the family my Heart and prayers go out to you to all minorities a change has to come an we as a people together can make it happen

  23. I like to send out my condolences to the family for their lost. It is why im strongly out there protesting for change. Pls be careful and encourage our blacks members to protest and vote.

  24. My condolences mom!

  25. That’s ❤️ breaking an. He fed them for free an u kill him ongoing to leave this right here

  26. Damn shame a black man can’t make a living without the police shooting ans killing him fo no reason. “GET YOUR KNEE OFF OUR NECKS”. WE DO HAVE RIGHTS!

  27. Yes they got to be a change but violence is not the way. It only takes a way from the message. So please no violence we want to be heard.

  28. THIS HAVE BEEN GOING ON SINCE SLAVERY OF THE ARABIC AND CUCASIANS 🤔 WHEN GOD RAIN FIRE ON THEIR LIFE 👂🙏🙏 🙏👁️👁️💛 💛 GOD SEES EVERYTHING. SO EVIL GET READY 😜♦️💪🙏 👁️👁️ HE IS SOON TO RETURN 🤔👩‍⚖️💪💪💪💪🙏👏👏👏👏🙌

  29. Lack of respect of person. A spirit of I just don’t like you. I don’t care and I wish you weren’t here in America. I spirit of lack of compassion for all colors. God didn’t just make you Mr. Whiteman, but God made all of us. We all are afforded the opportunity to bring something to the dinner table of life. To make a great dinner, you need all the utensils, all the plates, all the table cloths, you need the glasses, you need the salad plates, the silverware, the plates that hold the food, the desert dishes, most of all the food that will substain all of us etc. You see the meat on the plate doesn’t have the right to devalue the lowly english peas. The starches don’t have the right to say anything, but be grateful for the hungry mouth. The desert you need to shut up right now. You aren’t that sweet. Stop complaining about the reason for this table and how it’s set up. Nobody, but nobody owes you anything, but you owe it to yourself to find it in your heart to love above all else.

  30. “If you don’t understand why Black people are tired and exhausted, this is just further proof. We are dying for merely existing and a change has to come.”

My question is, where should the change start? You can change the criminal justice system, but if you do not reform the criminal set, change will never come.
I liken law enforcement to a good fisherman, they go where the fish are biting.

“Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines.” (Song of Solomon 2:15)

I will compare the little foxes to the criminal activity “black on black crime” in the black communities, and law enforcement to fully grown ones.
The little foxes are more devastating to the vines (black communities) when they invade the vineyard because of the following factors: they are difficult to detect under the shrub of impaired judgement, as compared to fully grown foxes that can be easily seen as they push their way through the communities trying to coral the little foxes.
“Cry now, cry later, as bad as it is, tomorrow will only be worse.”
A new tragedy on every page. Not just for minorities and illegals.
This will also affect the hopeless majority that rules nothing.
It’s poverty or jail, how can you eat tomorrow if you can’t find work today?

  31. Never bite the hand that feeds you

  32. This was very wrong in so many ways. The first thing that I see is the body cams were turned off. WHY???? Many other things I will not list. I am white. I have no idea really what it is truly like to be black. I do not think I am at all prejudiced, but maybe there are subtle things I am not aware of. I want to be educated not hated. Can people be educated without protests? Riots and looting are for sure not the answer. What way can there be for people to speak out and be heard? Just some of my thoughts. I am so sorry for the injustice and crimes against people of color in our country.

  33. R.I.P

  34. Words are not enough. There needs to be a complete overhaul of policing in the US. And, in the long run and more importantly our culture needs to radically change to one in which people of color never have to fear anything white people don’t have to fear.

  35. Why?

  36. Shameful yet the struggle continues for equal rights under the law

  37. My condolences and prayers to his family and friends.

The great oppression is up for change and it will happen in a blink of an eye.

The evil has gotten greater because the change that is about to take place no man has the power to stop it.

May GOD bless this world he gave to us as a gift to live happy and free..

  38. Ok! I was a STRONG racist against whites. Then when I saw them protesting..sign and other supporting l actions I said they all weren’t EVIL. Now , here WE GO AGAIN!…They are continuing to SHOOT and MURDER UNARMED BLACK MEN..IT WILL NEVER STOP. Until the END of existence..Until the end of this earth

  39. I am so fed up with all the police killings of my Brown brothers. There’s got to be a solution but, where is it. When will we find it. GOD, have mercy on us.

  40. MY DEEPEST PRAYERS & CONDOLENCES OUT TO THE FAMILY.

  41. I consider myself to be a strong black man. I believe it our duty to provide, protect, and lead our family, our communities. But I feel helpless, I feel hopeless. What is it that I can do to bring forth change? Everywhere I turn we are being hunted down, hated and discriminated against. How do I protect us? This isn’t about law, this is about the hearts of men. So I am lost. I am hurt. And I am angry.

  42. My condolences my deepest sympathy goes out to David mother and family praying for y’all strength peace and comfort in this difficult time this is so sad I can only imagine the pain u must feel with God u will get through this one day at a time my heart hurts for u I know u don’t know me but I do care may ur son R.I.P.
